Red velvet brownie bars

  • 100g soft brown sugar
  • 125g plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 120g butter or margarine
  • 110g butter or margarine
  • 100g chocolate
  • 2 eggs
  • 200g dark brown soft sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 teaspoons red food colouring
  • 100g plain flour
  • Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. In a large bowl combine all the ingredients for the base until dough forms. Press evenly into the bottom of a rectangular dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, for the brownie, melt the 110g butter or margarine with the chocolate and stir so it is smooth. In a separate large bowl, mix together eggs, sugar, almond extract and red colouring until smooth, then add in chocolate mixture and stir well.
  • Sieve in the 100g plain flour and mix until combined fully. Pour on top of base.
  • Bake until a skewer inserted near the centre of the brownie comes out clean, 40 to 50 minutes.
